5 Tips to Save for an Epic Getaway

Are you missing the vacation of your dreams this summer?

A big trip may have been off the table this year with border closures and lockdowns, but now’s the perfect time to start making plans for next year. A little extra planning can work to your benefit, too. More chances to plan for what you want. More time to save and make it the trip of a lifetime.

Here are a few tips and tricks to get you started saving for next year.

  1. Start simply, with just an old-fashioned change or cash jar. Place it in a visible spot in your house. Every time you have extra cash, drop it in the jar. If you have family members or friends that you’ll be traveling with, you can involve them in a friendly change jar competition. (This is a great way to involve kids, too.)

  2. Write down your travel budget goal on a Post-It and stick it in a spot that you’ll see every day. If you’re not already keeping close track of your spending, now’s a great time to go through your expenses and set up a budget tracker. After one month, see what’s truly optional that you can forego for now, and use that money towards your trip instead.

  3. Set up a specific savings account, take a good look at your budget, and see what you can comfortably set aside on a weekly or monthly basis. It’s best to make it an account that’s not easily accessible, where “just this once" withdrawals are more difficult to do on a whim. And look into setting up automatic transfers, so you don’t have to think about it.

  4. Plan your travel for off-season or around the shoulder season. You’ll be able to snag discounted rates on airfare, lodging, and more. Plus, you’ll have more of the place to yourself at a more relaxed pace. Off-peak lends itself well to intentional travel, giving you time and space to do what you really want to do, while your money stretches a lot further.

  5. Share your travel excitement with family and friends. Exploring ideas with the people you love can help you set your goals in motion, and believe in what’s possible. If they’ve been to the places you’re interested in, ask them for pro tips on where to go and what to do. Or they just might know someone who has connections there. Getting solid advice from other travelers jumpstarts your planning and is a sure way to save money on your journey.
